Gorakhnath Temple Attack: NIA Court Hands Death Sentence To Accused Murtaza Abbasi

A special NIA court on Monday awarded death sentence to Ahmed Murtaz Abbasi, who is accused in the 2022 Gorakhnath Temple attack in Lucknow.

Abbasi was given the death penalty under Section 121 and life imprisonment under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Court. Special Judge of the NIA court in Lucknow Vivekanand Sharan Tripathi pronounced the judgment in the case.

Abbasi, an IIT graduate and chemical engineer, tried to forcefully enter the famous Gorakhnath temple from the south gate on April 3 and attacked security personnel with a sickle.

He injured two Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) constables and tried to wrest their rifles after rushing to the temple’s security post but was overpowered by other security personnel. The police arrested Abbasi on the spot.

Past crimes

Abbasi was also arrested by Bengaluru police in 2014 for being in touch with ISIS propaganda activist Mehdi Masroor Biswas. “He was influenced by radical preachers of terrorist organizations and promoters of ISIS terrorism,” the ADG added.
