5 dead in Texas ‘execution-style’ shooting, suspect armed with AR-15 is on the loose

Five people, including an 8-year-old, were fatally shot at a home in Cleveland, Texas after a rampage Friday night that started with a gunshot noise complaint, according to the San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office.

The shooter, who remains at large, was apparently firing a rifle in his yard when neighbors asked him to stop because the child was trying to sleep, San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers said. The suspect then opened fire on the neighbors, Capers said.

Authorities found the victims Friday night after receiving a report of the harassment around 11:30 p.m. local time, the sheriff said.

“The victims, they came up to the fence, they said, ‘Hey, would you mind if you don’t shoot in the yard?’ We have a young child who is trying to sleep,” Capers said.

The suspect, who had been drinking, replied, “I’ll do whatever I want in my backyard.”

At some point, a doorbell camera in the victims’ home caught the suspect approaching with his rifle, Capers said.

Several people were shot near the residence, Capers said. The two female victims in the bedroom used their bodies to protect the two young children who survived, he added.

“They were trying to take care of them and keep them alive,” Capers said of the victims.

The victims were shot at close range above the neck — “almost execution style,” according to Capers.
