The company said in a statement: “We had a small number of role exclusions today. Like all corporations, we often consider our business priorities and make structural changes accordingly.”
They added: “We will continue to position our business and hire in key areas next year.”
According to US news website Axios, Microsoft has laid off nearly 1,000 employees. The report also states that employees at several levels and teams around the world have been given pink slips.
The move is in line with major tech companies cutting jobs after slowing hiring, according to the report.
It’s worth noting that this recent round of layoffs comes amid a slowdown in global markets, recession fears, and a funding winter.
Interestingly, Microsoft is not the only tech giant undergoing downsizing. Meta, the parent company of the social media platform Facebook, is also looking to cut costs by laying off roughly 12,000 people, according to the discussion forum Blind.
A Met employee said: “Those 15 percent will probably be put on a performance improvement plan (PIP) and then let go.”
