Earthquake with 6.1 magnitude hits northern Japan, no tsunami warning
A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck the eastern part of Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido on Saturday, authorities said, and no tsunami warning was issued.
The earthquake hit the Nemuro Peninsula at a depth of 61 kilometers (38 miles), according to the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED).
No injuries or damage were immediately reported.
In two municipalities in Hokkaido, the earthquake registered as a “lower 5” on Japan’s seven-point intensity scale, which measures ground movement.
That’s usually the level where items fall off shelves and unsecured furniture can move, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
