Amazon to cut 9,000 more jobs in second major downsizing this year
The global e-commerce giant has already laid off nearly 18,000 employees as mass layoffs continue at top tech companies worldwide
CEO Andy Jassy said in a release that the second phase of the company's annual planning process was completed this month and resulted in further job cuts
He said Amazon will still be hiring in some strategic areas. “Some may wonder why we didn't announce these role restrictions with the ones we announced a few months ago...
The short answer is that not all teams have completed their analyzes at the end of the fall; and instead of rushing these assessments without due diligence,
we decided to share these decisions as we made them so that people have the information as soon as possible,” Jassy said.
The announcement comes just days after parent company Meta Platforms announced on Facebook that it would cut 10,000 jobs this year following its first mass layoffs in the fall, which cut more than 11,000 jobs.
