Viral Video: Miss Sri Lanka New York Pageant Party Turns Violent, Internet Says “Utter Disgrace”
The first-ever Miss Sri Lanka beauty pageant, held in New York’s Staten Island, ended in a fight. The physical altercation took place at an after-party on Friday and the video went viral on social media. It shows men and women throwing punches at each other at the event, which was attended by more than 300 guests.
According to the South China Morning Post, it was unclear what triggered the clash, which also damaged some property. It further said that several arrests were made in connection with the fight.
The SCMP report said organizers decided to hold the event on State Island because it is home to a large number of Sri Lankans who have migrated to the US and because they wanted to help the island nation, which is in a “distressed state”.
Citing one of the pageant’s organizers, Sujani Fernanda, the New York Post reported that none of the 14 contestants were involved in the fight.
It comes a year after Sri Lanka’s reigning lady was arrested for snatching the crown off the head of a rival who she said should have been disqualified because she was divorced.
The incident angered Sri Lankan social media users who said such behavior tarnished their image in the United States. “This is typical village Sri Lankan behavior. Every event ends in a brawl. From elders to children to women.
They hit each other with plastic chairs, umbrellas. It’s quite thrillingto watch,” the user said on Twitter. “Absolute shame and disgrace. They should all be arrested and punished according to the law,” said another
