Several people were injured after a car plowed into a parade in Gallup, New Mexico, on Thursday, state police said.
Footage on social media captured the brown SUV weaving through the annual Intertribal Indian Ceremonial Parade, one of New Mexico’s longest-running events.
Among the injured were two officers from the Gallup Police Department who were injured.
According to KOAT7, the driver was driving the wrong way along the parade route. The portal said there were two other people in the SUV. The driver of the SUV was arrested. Police detained the two passengers while those present at the parade shouted outrage and confronted them.
According to the city of Gallup’s Facebook page, no bystanders or officers were struck by the SUV.
The Gallup Intertribal Ceremonial is a 10-day celebration consisting of in-person and virtual events. This year, the city celebrated the 100th anniversary of the annual event, the parade culminated in the first evening festivities.
