VIDEO: Earthquake Magnitude 5.3 hit Irkutsk Region
An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 occurred only 15 minutes ago 98 km northwest of Gusinoozyorsk, Russia, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Gusinoozyorsk, Selenginsky District, Buryatiya Republic, Russia, in the evening on Wednesday, June 8th, 2022, at 8:24 pm local time.
The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1 as well.
Other agencies reporting the same quake include France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.2, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Posol’skoye (pop. 780) located 27 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kabansk (pop. 6,300) located 60 km from the epicenter, Listvyanka (pop. 1,700) 66 km away, Gusinoozyorsk (pop. 24,100) 98 km away, Irkutsk (pop. 586,700) 105 km away, Markova (pop. 17,800) 108 km away, Shelekhov (pop. 47,500) 117 km away, and Ulan-Ude (pop. 360,300) 127 km away.
