The Pentagon has publicly released video footage of a U.S. drone strike in Kabul that killed 10 civilians throughout the final days of American withdrawal from Afghanistan.
The footage was obtained by The New York Times via a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against U.S. Central Command and was posted on its website.
The Pentagon had defended the August 29 strike but later termed it a tragic mistake.
The video reveals people shifting near the assault zone when the missile strikes a civilian car in a courtyard on a residential avenue.
The US military in its statement had claimed that the airstrike was carried out to stop Islamic State terrorists from detonating a bomb near the Kabul airport where evacuation was still underway.
Captain Bill Urban of US Central Command said he was “confident” that the goal, a car carrying at least one person associated with IS-K and a “substantial amount of explosive material”, was destroyed.
“We are assessing the possibilities of civilian casualties, though we have no indications at this time. We remain vigilant for potential future threats,” he said.
The US security forces were on high alert as three days earlier a suicide bombing at the airport had killed 13 U.S. troops and more than 160 Afghans. Later, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said they will proceed to carry out strikes in Afghanistan, after the attack at Kabul airport.
Acknowledging the error of the August 29 drone strike, the US Central Command said that the person driving the car had nothing to do with the IS group.
The man was recognized as Zemari Ahmadi, who labored for Nutrition and Education International, a U.S.-based aid group.
