NABRANGPUR: A 35-year-old man from Odisha’s Koraput district walked several kilometers carrying his wife’s body on his shoulders after she died in a car accident while returning from a hospital in neighboring Andhra Pradesh.
Police officers saw Samula Pangi and used an ambulance to take the body of his wife Ide Guru (30) from Sorada village in Pottangi block.
Pangi admitted his ailing wife to Sangivalasa Hospital in the Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh. But doctors there said he was not responding to the treatment and advised him to return home, about 100 km away.
Pangi said that he had hired a rickshaw to return to his village, but Guru died near Vizianagaram. The auto driver then refused to continue the journey and dropped them on the Chelluru ring road before leaving the spot.
With no other choice, Pangi carried his wife’s body on his shoulder and returned home, still 80 km away.
After some time, alerted by locals, Village TV Superintendent Tirupati Rao and Gantyada sub-superintendent Kiran Kumar arrested him.
Initially, it was difficult for the Andhra Pradesh police to guess what Pangi was saying because of the language barrier. Then it was found that a man understood Odisha’s words.
After learning what happened, the police used an ambulance to bring Pangi and his wife’s body to their village.
While Pangi thanked the police for their help, local residents praised the man for his prompt response.
The incident is reminiscent of the 2016 incident in Odisha’s Bhawanipatna, when another man, Dana Majhi, walked around 12 kilometers with his wife’s dead body on his shoulders, refusing to admit himself to the hospital. The incident made international news and embarrassed the Odisha government.
