Supreme Court partly stays demolition of Goa’s famous beach shack Curlies

The Supreme Court on Friday stayed an order by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that ordered the authorities to demolish parts of Goa’s beautiful Curlies river in Anjuna, news agency PTI reported. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India U U Lalit stopped the demolition of the structure in survey number, allowing demolition of other parts of the beach house. The bench also asked the lodge operators to temporarily suspend their business activities.

The Supreme Court’s order came a day after the NGT dismissed the appeal by the owner of Curlies against a 2016 order by the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) ordering the demolition of his structure, allegedly in violation of the Coastal Zone Regulation (CRZ). . “The new construction and replacement of the original one has been erected for commercial purposes, without the required permission in any development area,” the NGT said while rejecting the petition filed by Linet Nunes, the owner of Curlies.

This law has paved the way for the demolition of some structures along the river. In fact, the demolition process had already started on Friday before the Supreme Court took up the case.

Goa Deputy Superintendent Jivba Dalvi told ANI: “We are providing police protection for the vandalism. According to the law, it is demolished.
