Navaratri is one of the most celebrated and revered Hindu holidays, held annually for a night (and ten days) in honor of the mother goddess Durga. In Sanskrit, the word Navaratri means “nine nights” – Nava means nine, while ratri means nights. Each day is associated with an incarnation of Goddess Durga which includes:

Day 1 – Shailaputri, Day 2 – Brahmacharini, Day 3 – Chandraghanta, Day 4 – Kushmanda, Day 5 – Skandamata, Day 6 – Katyayani, Day 7 – Kaalaratri, Day 8 – Mahagauri, Day 9 – Siddhidatri. Nine different forms of Maa Durga are worshiped for nine nights. People celebrate the festival differently in different states of India. In the eastern and northeastern states, people prepare for Durga Puja, which is observed to celebrate the victory of goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura as she restores dharma. In southern states, people celebrate the victory of Durga or Kali. Navaratri is also known as Shariya Navaratri.

Devotees across the country decorate stages, hold recitals of old, legendary tales. People, along with their friends and families, also visit pandals to seek blessings from goddess Durga. As per the Hindu calendar, the festival is most celebrated between September-October and this year, it will be celebrated from September 26 to October 5. Many devotees often celebrate Navaratri by fasting for nine nights. The festival concludes on the final day which is celebrated as Vijayadashami or Dussehra. As per the legend, it is said that on this day, Lord Shri Ram rescued Sita by killing Ravana in Lanka.

This time for Sharadiya Navratri, the arrival of Maa Durga will be on an elephant and the departure of the mother will also take place on this vehicle. Goddes Durga arrival is on Monday and departure is on Wednesday. For both days, the mother’s vehicle will be an Elephant. The coming and going of elephants will have a good effect on society, the country and the world. People will be full of blessed rice. However, the risk of flooding will remain. There will be a drought situation somewhere due to excessive rain and somewhere due to lack of rainfall. Society has to deal with it. Arriving and departing on an elephant means good rain and a happy future. Sickness, sorrow, heat, all will disappear.

This time Navratri has nine days. Kalash installation is September 26. Mahasaptami is on 2nd October, Mahashtami on 3rd, Mahanavami on 4th and Vijaya dashami on 5th October.
