पंडित जगन्नाथ गुरुजी के अनुसार, करवा चौथ के दिन सुहागिन महिलाएं पति की लंबी आयु और स्वास्थ्य के लिए निर्जला व्रत रखती हैं। इस दिन मां पार्वती और भगवान शिव की पूजा की जाती है। इसके साथ ही दिनभर व्रत रखने के बाद शाम को चंद्रमा के दर्शन और अर्घ्य देने के बाद व्रत खोलती है।
करवा चौथ की चतुर्थी तिथि 12 अक्टूबर 2022, बुधवार को रात में 2 बजकर 03 मिनट से शुरू होगा जो 13 अक्टूबर 2022, गुरुवार को रात 2 बजकर 58 बजे पर समाप्त होगा। इसलिए 13 अक्टूबर को ही करवा चौथ का व्रत रखना शुभ होगा।

बहुत समय पहले, इंद्रप्रस्थपुर शहर में वेदशर्मा नाम का एक ब्राह्मण था। वेदशर्मा ने लीलावती से खुशी-खुशी शादी की थी और उनके सात महान पुत्र और वीरवती नाम की एक चतुर बेटी थी। सात भाइयों की इकलौती बहन के कारण उसे न केवल उसके माता-पिता बल्कि उसके भाइयों ने भी लाड़ प्यार किया।
एक बार जब वह परिपक्व हो गई, तो उसकी शादी एक उपयुक्त ब्राह्मण लड़के से कर दी गई। विवाह के बाद, जब वीरवती अपने माता-पिता के साथ थी, उसने अपनी बहनों के साथ अपने पति की लंबी उम्र के लिए करवा चौथ का व्रत रखा। करवा चौथ के व्रत के दौरान वीरवती की भूख सहन नहीं हुई। कमजोरी के कारण वह बेहोश होकर जमीन पर गिर पड़ी।
सभी भाई अपनी प्यारी बहन की दयनीय स्थिति को सहन नहीं कर सके। वे जानते थे कि वीरवती, एक पतिव्रत है, तब तक कोई भोजन नहीं करेगी जब तक कि वह चंद्रमा को न देख ले, भले ही उसकी जान की कीमत क्यों न हो। सभी भाइयों ने मिलकर व्रत तोड़ने के लिए बहन को बरगलाया करने की योजना बनाई। भाइयों में से एक दूर के वट वृक्ष पर छलनी और दीपक लेकर चढ़ गया। जब वीरवती को होश आया, तो बाकी भाइयों ने उसे बताया कि चाँद उग आया है और उसे चाँद देखने के लिए छत पर ले आया।
वीरवती ने एक दूर वट वृक्ष पर छलनी के पीछे दीपक देखा और माना कि चंद्रमा पेड़ के घने के पीछे उग आया है। अपनी भूख मिटाने के लिए उसने तुरंत दीप को प्रसाद चढ़ाया और उपवास तोड़ा।
जब वीरवती ने भोजन करना शुरू किया तो उसे सभी प्रकार के अपशकुन मिले। पहले काटने में उसे बाल मिले, दूसरे काटने में उसे छींक आई और तीसरे काटने में उसे अपने ससुराल वालों का निमंत्रण मिला। पहली बार अपने पति के घर पहुंचने के बाद उसे अपने पति का शव मिला।
अपने पति के शव को देखकर वीरवती रोने लगी और करवा चौथ के व्रत के दौरान कुछ गलती करने के लिए खुद को दोषी ठहराया। वह बेसुध होकर विलाप करने लगी। उनका विलाप सुनकर इंद्र देव की पत्नी देवी इंद्राणी वीरवती को सांत्वना देने पहुंचीं।
वीरवती ने इंद्राणी से पूछा कि करवा चौथ के दिन उसे ऐसा क्यों मिला और उसने अपने पति को जीवित करने के लिए भीख मांगी। वीरवती का पश्चाताप देखकर, देवी इंद्राणी ने उनसे कहा कि उन्होंने चंद्रमा को अर्घ दिए बिना ही व्रत तोड़ दिया और इस वजह से उनके पति की असमय मृत्यु हो गई। इंद्राणी ने वीरवती को सलाह दी कि वह करवा चौथ के उपवास सहित पूरे वर्ष में हर महीने चौथ का व्रत रखें और आश्वासन दिया कि उनके पति जीवित वापस आएंगे।
उसके बाद वीरवती ने पूरे विश्वास और सभी अनुष्ठानों के साथ मासिक उपवास किया। अंत में उन व्रतों का पुण्य संचय करने के कारण वीरवती को उसका पति वापस मिल गया।

Once she became mature, she was married off to a suitable Brahmin boy. After marriage, when Veeravati was with her parents, she along with her sisters observed Karva Chauth for the long life of her husband. Veeravati’s hunger could not be tolerated during the fasting of Karva Chauth. Due to weakness, she fainted and fell on the ground.
All the brothers could not bear the pathetic condition of their beloved sister. They knew that Veeravati, being a pativrata, would not eat any food until she saw the moon, even if it cost her life. All the brothers together made a plan to trick the sister into breaking the fast. One of the brothers climbed a distant banyan tree with a sieve and a lamp. When Veeravati regained consciousness, the rest of the brothers told her that the moon had risen and brought her to the terrace to see the moon.
Veeravati saw the lamp behind a sieve on a distant banyan tree and believed that the moon had risen behind the thicket of the tree. To satisfy his hunger, he immediately offered prasad to the lamp and broke the fast.
When Veeravati started eating, she got all kinds of bad omen. In the first bite she got hair, in the second bite she sneezed and in the third bite she got an invitation from her in-laws. After reaching her husband’s house for the first time, she found her husband’s body.
Seeing the dead body of her husband, Veeravati started crying and blamed herself for doing some mistake during the fast of Karva Chauth. She started moaning helplessly. Hearing his lamentation, Goddess Indrani, the wife of Indra Dev, came to console Veeravati.
Veeravati asked Indrani why she got this on the day of Karva Chauth and begged for her husband to be alive. Seeing Veeravati’s repentance, Goddess Indrani told her that she broke the fast without offering Argha to the moon and because of this her husband died untimely. Indrani advised Veeravati to observe a fast of Chauth every month throughout the year including the fasting of Karva Chauth and assured that her husband would come back alive.
After that Veeravati observed a monthly fast with full faith and all the rituals. In the end, Veervati got her husband back due to accumulation of virtues of those vows.
